History
Greensburg Hose Company #7 was organized October 10, 1905. This was about three and one-half months after the Boroughs of East Greensburg and Greensburg had voted to consolidate. There were thirty-four charter members.
Meetings were first held in a small building which had been used by East Greensburg Borough. In 1910, a new two-story single bay brick building was erected and used until 1933 when a new two-story two bay brick building was erected adjacent to the 1910 building and used until 1991 when the present larger metal building was built on the same site.
The first fire fighting apparatus of the company was a two-wheeled hand-drawn cart. In 1915, Company #7 purchased a Pop-Hartford chassis. Members contributed and worked remodeling the truck into a usable fire truck. It served until 1926 when the Borough purchased a 750 gallon Seagrave pumper with chemical attachment and booster. In 1949, the city purchased a 1000 gallon Seagrave pumper; the first to be painted in the new colors of cream and red. This engine was used until 1965 when a new cab forward 1000 gallon Seagrave was purchased. The present engine is a 1250 gallon Seagrave that was put in service November 1991. Company #7 has operated a light rescue truck since the early 60s and presently has a 1985 Chevrolet rescue truck.
Company #7 has a roster of some 65 members. Through the years there have been many members who have come up through the ranks and served the department in all the various offices. They take great pride in being able to serve their Company and the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department. Many are the names of Company #7 on the memorial list of those who gave unselfishly of labor and time to help make what the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department is today.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Company #7 has been a valuable asset. Organized in 1915, it was the first women's fire organization in Greensburg.
